Cuarón’s ‘Ascension’ Lands at Apple TV With Balfe to Star
Apple TV greenlit "Ascension," a psychological horror thriller from Alfonso Cuarón, with Caitríona Balfe starring and executive producing.
Apple TV has greenlit “Ascension,” a psychological horror thriller from Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, with Caitríona Balfe attached to star and executive produce.
The series, inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel “Last Days,” has been in development for nearly a decade.
First reported in 2017, when Casey Affleck was originally attached, the project now centers on Balfe as Rose, “a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own,” per the show’s logline.
“When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.”
Oscar-Winner Alfonso Cuarón Leads Creative Team
Cuarón co-wrote the series with his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James, and Christian White.
James and White serve as co-showrunners, with James also leading the directing duties.
Cuarón executive produces through his Esperanto Filmoj banner, which holds an overall deal with Apple.
Esperanto’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz also executive produce, alongside Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, David Levine, and Zack Hayden.
The order continues Cuarón’s working relationship with both Apple and Anonymous Content following “Disclaimer,” his first Apple TV limited series, which aired in late 2024 and earned Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice nominations for stars Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline.
Cuarón renewed his relationship with the streamer via a first-look pact.
Anonymous Content also produces Apple’s upcoming series “Neuromancer” and “12 12 12.”
Caitríona Balfe Returns to TV in New Horror Series
“Ascension” marks Balfe’s return to television after eight seasons on Starz’s “Outlander,” which wrapped earlier this year and earned her four Golden Globe nominations.
The role also continues her association with Apple — she is currently among the cast of the upcoming Apple original film “Tenzing.”
Her film credits include “Belfast,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Now You See Me,” and “Super 8.”

The order comes as the long-gestating project moves toward production.
Casting rumors around the lead role had circulated for roughly a year, with a handful of high-profile actresses reportedly under consideration.
Alfonso Cuarón’s Award-Winning Career
Cuarón, whose films have earned 11 Oscar nominations, shared a best original screenplay nomination with Carlos for “Y tu mamá también.”
He won two Oscars for “Gravity” in 2014 — best director and best editing — followed by two more for “Roma” in 2019, taking best director and best cinematography.
His other credits include “Children of Men” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
The series order arrives just days after Paramount+ greenlit a thriller with a similar title, “Ascent,” starring Viola Davis.
