WIT Studio Teases Attack on Titan Announcement for August 20
WIT Studio announced an Attack on Titan project with a teaser set for August 20.
WIT Studio has fueled speculation about a new Attack on Titan project with a cryptic social media post pointing to an August 20 announcement.
The teaser, accompanied by a character visual, marks the studio’s first public move in the franchise since MAPPA took over animation duties in 2020.
Teaser hints at prequel project
The studio’s message reads: “It seems that they, during ‘that period,’ will be holding a special dinner.”
Posted alongside the text is a new illustration of six central characters — Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Levi, Hange, and Erwin — credited to manga creator Hajime Isayama, publisher Kodansha, and the Attack on Titan The Final Season Production Committee.
The combination of a vague “special dinner” reference and a cast lineup of pre–Final Season characters has prompted fan theories about a prequel project.
Given that the Final Season concluded the stories of most of the figures shown, the theories have gained traction.
The reference to “that period” adds another layer of mystery.
Without further context, the studio has offered no clarification on the timeline, setting, or format of what is to come.
Unexpected return to the franchise
WIT Studio animated the first 59 episodes of the Attack on Titan TV anime across its initial three seasons.
The studio handed off the series to MAPPA ahead of the Final Season, which ran from 2020 to 2023 across 35 episodes and two specials.
Since then, WIT has focused on other projects, including Spy x Family and Ranking of Kings.
Any return to the Attack on Titan IP is a surprise development.
MAPPA, meanwhile, continues to maintain a connection to the franchise.
The studio released a special Attack on Titan visual for its own 15th anniversary and is attached to the upcoming video game Attack on Titan 3.
Scheduled for release on December 10, the game is another franchise expansion.
Expanding beyond the original anime
The teaser aligns with comments from Attack on Titan producer Tetsuya Kinoshita.

During the premiere of Attack on Titan – The Official Concert – Beyond the Walls World Tour, he said the team intends to expand the franchise beyond the original anime.
“we plan to continue creating films like Last Attack, concerts like this one, and various game collaborations moving forward.”
The franchise has already seen a post-anime push in that direction.
The compilation film The Last Attack, which bundled the final two specials with additional footage, premiered in Japan on November 8, 2024.
It crossed 1 billion yen at the box office by December 5 of that year.
Crunchyroll began streaming the film on April 17, 2025.
Manga origins and anime conclusion
Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga was serialized in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine from September 2009 to April 2021.
Its chapters were compiled into 34 volumes.
The complete 94-episode anime adaptation concluded with the Final Chapters specials (episodes 88–94).
Those specials were then collected and expanded into The Last Attack.
What fans can expect next
With the August 20 date now confirmed, fans will not have long to wait for clarification on what WIT Studio, Isayama, and the production committee have planned.
They will also find out whether the “special dinner” will indeed serve as a prequel or something entirely new.
