Stana Katic, Connie Nielsen Join Apple TV’s Monsterverse Spinoff

Stana Katic and Connie Nielsen join Apple TV+'s Monsterverse spinoff series, led by Wyatt Russell.

Stana Katic is returning to episodic television for the first time since Absentia ended in 2020, joining Legendary’s untitled Monsterverse series at Apple TV+.

The casting marks Katic’s most high-profile series role in five years and pairs her with Connie Nielsen (Gladiator, Wonder Woman) in the expanding spinoff led by Wyatt Russell.

Casting and Series Premise

Both actresses join a cast that already includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson, and Nyasha Hatendi. Character details for Katic and Nielsen remain under wraps.

Russell, who also serves as an executive producer, stars as a young Col. Lee Shaw, a character originated by his father Kurt Russell in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

From showrunner Joby Harold, the series is set in 1984 and follows Shaw, an American operative who goes on a secret mission behind enemy lines to stop the Soviets from unleashing a new Titan during the Cold War.

JD Dillard is directing the pilot episode, with Harold and Tory Tunnell executive producing for Safehouse Pictures alongside Russell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Dillard, Andy Goddard, and James Skotchdopoloe. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character.

Katic’s Return to TV

Katic is best known to television audiences as Detective Kate Beckett on Castle, where she starred opposite Nathan Fillion for eight seasons from 2009 to 2016.

She later built a devoted following with the thriller Absentia, in which she played FBI agent Emily Byrne, a character who returns after being declared dead following a six-year disappearance.

Katic starred in all three seasons of the series, appearing in 30 episodes between 2017 and 2020. The show earned renewed attention after finding a new audience on Netflix.

Since Absentia wrapped, Katic has largely worked in voice and film. She voiced Wonder Woman in the animated DC films Justice Society: World War II and Justice League: Warworld.

Stana Katic Joins Monsterverse

More recently, she starred in the Lifetime movie Kidnapped in Her Own Home: The Martha Carelli Story. The Monsterverse role represents her return to a major serialized television platform.

Nielsen, meanwhile, is currently starring in the MGM+ series Robin Hood as Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The series represents a notable streaming franchise addition for an actress whose filmography has spanned Gladiator, the DCEU’s Wonder Woman films, and a recent run of prestige television.

The Expanding Monsterverse

The new series joins a cross-platform Monsterverse franchise that began with the 2014 Godzilla film and continued through Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and most recently Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

The next theatrical installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for 2027.

By anchoring the spinoff around a younger version of a character Kurt Russell played in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Legendary is building a connective tissue between its streaming and film properties.

The 1984 Cold War setting also gives the series a distinct tonal identity separate from the modern-day kaiju action of the theatrical films, positioning it as a period thriller within the larger Titan mythology.
