Dave Bautista in Talks to Replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’

Dave Bautista is in talks to replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Amazon's 'God of War' series after Hurst's bicep injury required surgery and a 6–12 month recovery.

Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War series is undergoing a major lead change. Dave Bautista is negotiating to take over the role of Kratos after original star Ryan Hurst suffered a bicep tear on set in late June.

The injury, which required surgery and a recovery estimated at 6–12 months, would have pushed production past the planned fall 2026 restart. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television opted to recast rather than wait.

Hurst had been cast as Kratos in January 2026 and was roughly four months into filming when the stunt-related injury occurred. The recovery timeline would have delayed a return to production until 2027.

A gap the studios deemed untenable given the back-to-back two-season order already in place. Prep for the new lead is expected to begin in mid-August, with production aiming to resume in Vancouver in mid-October 2026.

Injury Forces Recast

Hurst’s bicep tear, sustained while performing a stunt, was severe enough to require surgery. The 6–12 month recovery window meant the actor could not return to set until well into 2027.

This disrupted the tightly scheduled two-season shoot. The series began filming in February 2026 in Vancouver on a two-season order, with the seasons slated to film back-to-back.

A plan the studios are determined to keep intact. Rather than pause the production indefinitely, Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures Television opted to recast the lead role.

Bautista Steps Into the Role

“Bautista, a former professional wrestler known for his physically demanding roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Dune films, is considered well-suited to the part of Kratos.”

He has an existing relationship with Amazon MGM Studios. Bautista starred in The Wrecking Crew, My Spy, and My Spy: The Eternal City.

He has upcoming roles in Road House 2 and the Highlander remake. His background as a decorated professional wrestler aligns with the physical demands of Kratos.

Physicality and Legacy

Bautista’s casting would bring a different physicality to the role. He has recently bulked up for the similarly physical fantasy film Highlander.

His previous credits include six Marvel films as Drax. He also appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two.

Additional credits include Blade Runner 2049, Knock at the Cabin, Spectre, Army of the Dead. He also voiced Aang in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.

Series Background

The God of War series is based on the two most recent installments of the PlayStation video game franchise. It follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.

Per the show’s logline, through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god. Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Callum Vinson remains attached as Atreus for the current season. The character is also expected to be recast for Season 2 as part of the broader schedule reset.

Supporting Cast and Production Team

The series boasts a strong supporting cast: Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

The show is written, executive produced, and showrun by Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica). Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon.

It is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions. Reps for Amazon declined to comment.

Agents and Next Steps

Bautista is repped by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. The recast marks a significant pivot for one of Amazon’s flagship fantasy series.

The decision to move forward with a new lead rather than delay the entire project underscores the studio’s commitment to maintaining the fall 2026 production window. The back-to-back season order remains intact.

With Bautista now in talks, the God of War series is poised to continue its journey, albeit with a different face leading the charge.
