Amazon Greenlights ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Animated Spinoff as Cavill Confirms Live-Action Role
Amazon greenlights a new Warhammer 40,000 animated spinoff focusing on the Deathwatch, executive produced by Henry Cavill.
Amazon is doubling down on its adaptation of the grimdark universe of ‘Warhammer 40,000,’ placing a new animated event series into development alongside the previously announced live-action project.
The streaming giant has partnered with Blur Studios and Games Workshop to produce the animated spinoff, which will be executive produced by Henry Cavill — who also confirmed via Instagram this week that he will star in the lead role of the live-action series being written by horror auteur Mike Flanagan.
The animated project, first reported by Variety, is a direct spinoff of Prime Video’s anthology series ‘Secret Level,’ which debuted in late 2024 and featured a celebrated ‘Warhammer 40,000’ episode.
That episode was directed by Dave Wilson, who now serves as co-creator and director of the new series, developing it alongside John Orloff, whose credits include ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Band of Brothers.’
Deathwatch Takes the Lead
While exact plot details remain under wraps, the series will focus on the Deathwatch, an elite chapter of Space Marines that specializes in hunting down alien threats.
The choice signals a deep dive into one of the franchise’s most lore-rich factions, offering a distinct narrative lane separate from the live-action project.
“Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” Wilson said in a statement.
“The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right.
This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.
I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
Wilson’s involvement, alongside ‘Secret Level’ creator Tim Miller as executive producer, gives the animated series a direct creative lineage from the anthology episode that first tested the waters.

Cavill and his producing partner Natalie Viscuso will also executive produce, joining Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Andy Smillie from Games Workshop.
The series is being developed in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop.
Cavill Doubles Down on Live-Action Lead
Separately, Games Workshop revealed in a financial report that Mike Flanagan — fresh off his adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ — has been tapped to write the live-action ‘Warhammer 40,000’ series.
Cavill, who is attached to star, took to Instagram to address fan concerns directly.
“We have already been working with [Flanagan] to craft the creative, and we’re making some considerable advances in story,” Cavill wrote.
“Importantly, some of you have been asking if I will still be starring in the lead role in the live action TV series—rest assured, I most certainly will!
Who that character is, however, shall remain a secret for now!”
In a separate post, Cavill described the challenge of adapting the dense source material.
“As the fans will know, it’s an absolute monster to wrestle but Mike’s extraordinary talents are helping it take form wonderfully.
As a combined force and with the good folks at Games Workshop we are all working tirelessly to bring you the best, most Warhammer universe that you could possibly imagine.”
The twin announcements — animated and live-action — underscore Amazon’s aggressive push into game IP.
In addition to ‘Secret Level’ and the hit ‘Fallout’ series, Prime Video is developing live-action adaptations of ‘Tomb Raider’ (starring Sophie Turner), ‘God of War’ (currently recasting after an on-set injury to Kratos actor Ryan Hurst), ‘Life Is Strange,’ ‘Mass Effect,’ and ‘Wolfenstein.’
For ‘Warhammer 40,000’ fans, the convergence of a live-action series with a high-profile showrunner and a companion animated series from the team behind the acclaimed ‘Secret Level’ episode represents a rare moment of coordinated expansion.

With Cavill’s deep personal investment in the franchise and Wilson’s long-held ambition to tell a long-form story in the universe, the projects are proceeding with a level of creative commitment that mirrors the scale of the IP itself.
