McConaughey and Wife Greeted by Pope Leo at Vatican
Matthew McConaughey and his wife met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican during the pope’s August 5, 2026 general audience.
Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, met Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on August 5, 2026, during the pontiff’s weekly general audience.
The Oscar-winning actor and his wife were among the attendees at the service when Pope Leo approached the couple afterward, offering a warm greeting as he made his way through the basilica.
Video footage distributed by the Associated Press and Vatican Media captures McConaughey, dressed in a navy-blue suit, shaking the pope’s hand, patting him on the shoulder, and exchanging brief remarks.
“What an honor and blessing it was to be able to share this moment with my immediate family who came all the way from Brasil,” she wrote. “I grew up with my parents’ Catholic teachings of faith, hope and prayer, and today was a celebration of that! Thank you also to Father Paolo Benanti. I learned so much today.”
Camila Alves McConaughey documented the encounter on Instagram, calling the visit “an honor and blessing.” In her post, she revealed that the trip held deep personal significance, as she was joined by her immediate family who traveled from Brazil for the occasion.
A Personal Pilgrimage
Father Paolo Benanti is a Franciscan friar and professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University who has served as a key advisor to the Vatican on issues of artificial intelligence and technology ethics.
The meeting marks something of a full-circle moment for McConaughey, who has grown increasingly open about his Christian faith in recent years.
The actor, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2014 for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, has previously described a transformative spiritual experience early in his career.
In a 2020 interview with Relevant Magazine, he recounted a four-hour confession to a monk named Brother Christian at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert in New Mexico, which he visited while struggling with what he called “the excesses of fame.”

McConaughey has continued to speak publicly about the role of faith in his daily life. “I go to church once a week. I go, I pray and I do inventory.
I take a deep breath, understand myself as me being number two in God’s house, and go back through my week,” he has said.
Faith Beyond the Spotlight
His 2024 book Poems & Prayers, a collection of his proverbs, lyrical prose and writings on deeper themes, further reflects his spiritual journey. “I’m peddling belief. I think we’re in short supply of it,” McConaughey has said.
“And whether that’s belief in God, belief in yourself, belief in your kid’s future, whatever that may be, we can use more of it.”
The Vatican audience represents one of the highest-profile intersections of Hollywood celebrity and the Catholic Church so far in the early days of Pope Leo XIV’s papacy, and comes as McConaughey continues to weave his faith into his public identity.
