Villains Are Destined to Die Webtoon Concludes Main Story, TV Anime in Production

Kakao announced a TV anime adaptation of the webtoon Villains Are Destined to Die after its main story concluded in July.

Kakao’s Piccoma platform has announced a TV anime adaptation of Villains Are Destined to Die, the Korean webtoon based on Gwon Gyeoeul’s web novel and illustrated by SUOL.

The news landed alongside the webtoon’s completion, with the main story wrapping at chapter 214 in July.

Announcement Coincides with Final Chapter

The reveal came on August 9, paired with the release of the manhwa’s final main story chapter on Piccoma on August 8.

The series launched in 2020 and has since become one of the most-read webcomics on the Kakao Page platform in South Korea, drawing more than 14.8 million views and 1.5 million likes.

The original novel by Gwon Gyeoeul has surpassed 1.7 million views and 145,000 likes.

Both creators issued statements marking the occasion.

“Thanks to the tremendous support from our readers, the anime adaptation of this work has finally been decided. I am very happy that we will be able to deliver the characters moving vividly on screen! And congratulations on the long-awaited completion of the manga! Please look forward to the Villains Are Destined to Die anime.”

SUOL, the webtoon’s illustrator, echoed that sentiment, calling the dual announcement a long-cherished moment for the creative team.

“Thanks to the warm support we have received from our readers, the TV anime adaptation of Villains Are Destined to Die has been decided! In addition to the completion of the work, I am thrilled to be able to deliver this wonderful news. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who is breathing new life into the work. Please look forward to and support the Villains Are Destined to Die anime which is currently in production!”

Plot, Genre, and International Reach

The story follows a university student who finds herself pulled into the otome game she had been playing, awakening as Penelope Eckhart, the villainess of the notoriously difficult hard mode.

Tapas, which serializes the English version, summarizes the premise: “This game’s got me obsessed! It’s like it’s taken over my life… wait—HARD MODE ACTIVATED. No-no-no-no-no! It has literally taken me and thrown me into the part of Penelope Eckhart.

Love is easy as the heroine, but as the hated villain, I’m trying very hard not to die… at the hands of my brothers… the prince… a fork… every possible ending is death!”

The webtoon concluded its main story in South Korea via Kakao Page in July, with the English version serialized on Tapas through Chapter 210.

In Japan, Piccoma publishes both the manga and Gwon Gyeoeul’s novel.

Kadokawa released the first compiled book volume in March 2022 and will publish the 12th on November 17, while Ize Press handles the English print edition, with the ninth volume due August 18.

The series is published by D&C MEDIA.

The title’s profile rose further when it won the SMARTOON category at the Piccoma AWARD 2026, a sign of its commercial weight within the Japanese digital manga market.

The series is often compared to Solo Leveling as a major isekai and romantasy franchise, though the two occupy distinct corners of the genre.

Production Details Remain Undisclosed

No studio, staff, cast, release window, or format has been announced for the TV anime.

The simultaneous timing of the anime reveal and the webtoon’s conclusion gives the franchise a clean handoff from page to screen, positioning Villains Are Destined to Die for its next phase without a production gap.
