Ana Nogueira Tapped to Write DCU’s ‘Wonder Woman’ Reboot

DC Studios has hired screenwriter Ana Nogueira, who is already penning the upcoming ‘Supergirl’ film, to write the script for the studio’s reboot of ‘Wonder Woman,’ Variety has confirmed.

The move signals a strategic continuity in the creative team under co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran as they build out the first chapter of the new DC Universe, titled ‘Gods and Monsters.’

Nogueira is also writing a live-action ‘Teen Titans’ movie for the studio, making her one of DC Studios’ most in-demand writers.

Gunn told Entertainment Weekly in June that a new ‘Wonder Woman’ script ‘is being written right now,’ and Variety reported on July 16 that the feature project was being fast-tracked.

The studio is also developing ‘Paradise Island,’ an HBO series set on Wonder Woman’s homeland of Themyscira, though Gunn has said progress on that project is ‘slow moving, but it’s moving.’

Nogueira’s DCU Double Duty

Nogueira began her career as an actor, appearing on ‘The Michael J. Fox Show,’ ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and the crime series ‘Hightown.’

Her first produced screenplay will be ‘Supergirl,’ directed by Craig Gillespie (‘Cruella’) and starring Milly Alcock (‘House of the Dragon’).

The film is adapted from Tom King’s graphic novel ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ and is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.

Alcock made a brief cameo at the end of Gunn’s ‘Superman’ feature, which has grossed $406.8 million globally since opening July 11.

In a recent interview with Collider, Nogueira discussed how ‘Supergirl’ champions humanity and vulnerability.

She also shared her key principles for writing the DCU’s ‘Wonder Woman’ reboot, tying the thematic approach of the two projects together.

Nogueira emphasized the importance of representation, with Alcock noting that ‘Supergirl’ carries a universal message.

A New Chapter Under Gunn and Safran

The last iteration of Wonder Woman was portrayed by Gal Gadot, who debuted in 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ directed by Patty Jenkins.

That film grossed $822 million worldwide, shattering industry assumptions about female-led superhero movies.

Gadot and Jenkins reunited for ‘Wonder Woman 1984,’ which opened during the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2020.

Gadot also appeared as the character in 2017’s ‘Justice League,’ 2021’s ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ and 2023’s ‘The Flash.’

When Gunn and Safran took the reins at DC Studios, they effectively rebooted the DC Universe, starting with the streaming series ‘Creature Commandos’ and Gunn’s ‘Superman’ feature.

The pair opted to recast Wonder Woman with a new actress and a fresh take, moving away from the Jenkins-Gadot era.

Gunn has stated that the new ‘Wonder Woman’ will have a ‘very distinct take’ compared to what audiences have seen before.
