Darth Maul Voice Actor Calls ‘Phantom Menace’ the ‘Biggest Disappointment’ of His Life

Peter Serafinowicz, the original voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, has publicly condemned George Lucas’ 1999 prequel as “the biggest disappointment” of his life.

He also expressed frustration over his reportedly meager compensation for the role. Speaking on the Class Clown podcast, Serafinowicz detailed his disillusionment with a franchise he once adored.

The British actor, who grew up idolizing Star Wars and watching A New Hope daily during a childhood phase, initially leapt at the opportunity to voice Maul.

But the finished film left him deeply unsatisfied.

From Dream Role to Disillusionment

Serafinowicz recalled the surreal experience of working with Lucas, who compared his vocal talents to those of the legendary James Earl Jones.

“James Earl Jones has got the best voice of any human ever, right?” Serafinowicz said. “Then, suddenly there I was with George Lucas, and he was like saying, ‘Well, Peter, you’re the new James Earl Jones,’ and I was like, ‘F***ing hell, am I? Then why are you paying me such s*** money, George?’”

The actor, who dubbed over the lines of on-set performer Ray Park, admitted he was not sold on the character’s design or the final product.

“It was weird because this character Darth Maul… I don’t know what I thought of this guy,” Serafinowicz continued. “The design of it was… I wasn’t that into it.

When I saw the film I thought it was the biggest disappointment of my life at that point, watching that film. It really was. Have you seen it?”

Despite his criticisms, Serafinowicz acknowledged the excitement of being part of the galaxy far, far away.

“At that time it was so exciting that even being in it… doing this thing, what I thought would be this iconic thing, it was just unimaginable.

It is a weird thing. He only says about 20 words in the film. I’m delighted I’ve done it but it’s a really weird thing to be associated with.”

Replacing Maul and New Ventures

Serafinowicz was later replaced as the voice of Darth Maul by Sam Witwer, who voiced the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and returned for the Disney+ animated series Maul – Shadow Lord earlier this year.

But the actor is not leaving mega-franchises behind. Variety recently reported that Serafinowicz is set to join HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, where he will play Peeves the Poltergeist.

The candid remarks have gone viral, reigniting debate over Hollywood’s treatment of early franchise actors — especially those whose contributions are limited to post-production dubbing.

Serafinowicz’s comments add to a long history of actors expressing regret or disappointment over their involvement in blockbuster sagas, though few have been as blunt about both the film and the paycheck.
