Dinosaur Jr.’s New Album ‘There Near’ Drops August 28 With 11 Tracks

3 min readDinosaur Jr. have announced their 13th studio album, “There Near,” arriving August 28 via Jagjaguwar.
The band also shared the lead single “Several Got Away” alongside a video directed by Guy Kozak.
The 11-track album is the trio’s first new music in five years, following 2021’s “Sweep It Into Space.”
The full tracklist includes “Several Got Away,” “No Friends,” “Everything at Once,” “Take Me With You,” “Blowin’ Up,” “Gone Off,” “Clam Along,” “Walk Me Back,” “Read the Room,” “Put It Down,” and “No One’s Ready.”
Returning to the Early Sound
Frontman J Mascis has long been known for his signature guitar tone, and on “There Near,” he went back to the source.
I bought the same amp that Chris Dixon had when we made our first album. Chris recorded us at his house with his amp. It has a real interesting sound I haven’t gotten for a while. And it’s something I was trying to get back to on this album. The Stones started using Mesa Boogies in the ‘70s after they heard Santana playing through them. Then The Clash copied The Stones, etc. As the years went on into the MK 2 and so on, the Boogie got more metal sounding. But the MK 1 has a souped-up Fender sound.
You always hear how Rick Rubin always makes bands he’s producing sit down and listen to their first album and say let’s get back to that sound. So I just gave myself his advice.
The amp, Mascis explained, offers a “souped-up Fender sound” that the band hasn’t captured in years.
He noted the MK1 predates the more metal-oriented later models, aligning with the classic rock lineage of Santana, the Rolling Stones, and the Clash.
Fall Tour and Enduring Chemistry
Dinosaur Jr. are currently on a summer tour performing their 1991 album “Where You Been” in full with support from Band of Horses.
A fall headline tour with Stef Chura opening begins in October.
Nearly two decades after the original lineup of Mascis, Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph reunited, the band’s chemistry remains central.
“Several Got Away” is described as a blown-out power-pop tune showcasing Mascis’ violent jangle-fuzz guitar tone and shredding.
On Songwriting and Streaming
Mascis also shared his approach to writing lyrics, noting that meaning often emerges organically.
I’m not always sure what a song is ‘about’ when I’m writing it. I guess the meaning will present itself at some point. I’ll use whatever words work. And a lot of it will be influenced by whatever esoteric mumbo jumbo I’m reading at the time. I try not to think too hard about any of it.
I think it’s a drag that Spotify shows all the lyrics to a song. What’s the fun of that?
The video for “Several Got Away” was inspired by a Henry Darger painting and depicts the band being chased across a field.
