MAPPA Adapts Shojo Manga ‘Fall in Love, You False Angels’ for 2027

Studio MAPPA has officially announced it is producing the television anime adaptation of Fall in Love, You False Angels, the award-winning shojo manga by Coco Uzuki.

The news arrived during MAPPA’s 15th anniversary livestream event, where the studio also unveiled a teaser trailer, a teaser visual, and the full production staff for the project.

The series is currently slated for a 2027 release.

Key Staff and Teaser Revealed

Directing the adaptation is Yasutomo Okamoto, whose previous credits include unit director on Zombie Land Saga: Yumeginga Paradise and co-director on episodes of Lazarus and Zenshu.

Series composition will be handled by Yohei Yamazaki, while Mariko Oka, known for her work on The Rose of Versailles and Hell Girl, takes on character design duties.

Additional staff credits include art director Takumi Hashimoto, color designer Kana Tanabe (who also worked on Lazarus), director of photography Shunsuke Taniguchi, editor Ayumu Takahashi, and animation producer Yuriko Waki.

The teaser trailer and visual, both released during the livestream, offered the first look at the anime’s aesthetic, though no footage or images have been shared publicly outside the event.

Manga Background and MAPPA’s Shojo History

The original manga by Coco Uzuki began serialization in Kodansha’s shojo magazine Dessert in April 2023 and has since collected seven volumes.

In 2025, it won the 49th Kodansha Manga Award in the shojo category, cementing its status as one of the publisher’s most prominent recent titles.

Kodansha USA publishes the manga in English.

The story follows Otogi Katsura, a high school girl admired by everyone as the perfect beauty.

Determined to maintain that flawless image, she carefully hides her true personality from those around her.

The manga’s premise and emotional depth have resonated with readers, leading to its rapid rise in popularity.

While MAPPA is best known for action-driven hits like Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan Final Season, this is not the studio’s first venture into shojo territory.

In 2018, MAPPA produced the Banana Fish TV anime, which, despite its crime-and-action reputation, was originally serialized in a shojo magazine.

More recently, the studio handled the 2025 film adaptation of The Rose of Versailles, directed by Ai Yoshimura and released theatrically in Japan before streaming on Netflix.

The announcement of Fall in Love, You False Angels was part of a broader presentation of MAPPA’s upcoming slate, which the studio began teasing earlier this month as part of its 15th anniversary celebration.

Founded in 2011, MAPPA has built a reputation for high-quality animation across a wide range of genres.

The decision to adapt a popular shojo title further signals the studio’s commitment to diversifying its portfolio and the growing mainstream appeal of the genre.
