‘Perfect Crown’ Becomes Hulu’s Biggest Korean Series Ever

Hulu has crowned a new king of K-drama. The platform announced Thursday that Perfect Crown, starring IU and Byeon Woo-seok, has become the most-watched Korean original series of all time on Disney+ and Hulu globally.

It achieved the milestone within just five days of its international launch on April 10. The romantic comedy, produced by MBC in 2026, has amassed 43 million views worldwide to date and continues to grow its audience week over week.

To mark the achievement, Disney+ and Hulu released a celebratory graphic on X, underscoring the show’s dominance across multiple regions. Perfect Crown is the number one show in the United States and Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

It has trended in more than 40 countries. It is also the top Korean title of all time globally on the platforms, and the most globally travelled Korean premiere based on 28 days of views.

Record-Breaking Viewership

Disney Plus announced, “As of five days after its global release on Disney Plus, Perfect Crown has become the most-watched Korean series worldwide, proving its overwhelming global hit status.”

The series increased its viewership by 43% in seven days for episode 8 compared to the premiere, demonstrating strong word-of-mouth momentum.

In Korea, the show airs on MBC in the coveted Friday-Saturday prime-time slot, where its first episode scored a 7.8% rating — the third-highest premiere rating for a Friday-Saturday drama on the network.

It trails only Chief Detective 1958 (10.1%) and Knight Flower (7.9%). By its second episode, ratings climbed to 9.5%.

The series is set in an alternate-reality modern South Korea where the country remains a constitutional monarchy.

IU plays Seong Hui-ju, a sharp-elbowed chaebol heiress frustrated by her commoner legal status, while Byeon Woo-seok portrays Grand Prince I-AN, the king’s second son whose royal title comes with little else.

When mounting pressures push them into a marriage of convenience, the arrangement proves harder to keep strictly transactional than either planned.

Star Power and Creative Team

IU arrives fresh off her acclaimed turn in Netflix’s When Life Gives You Tangerines, which won best drama at last year’s Baeksang Arts Awards.

Byeon became one of Korea’s most bankable leading men after the 2024 tvN romance Lovely Runner turned him into a phenomenon.

The two previously shared the screen about a decade ago in SBS’s Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), when Byeon was still a supporting player.

Perfect Crown is directed by Park Joon-hwa, known for What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim and Alchemy of Souls, and written by Yoo Ji-won. The entire first season is available to stream now on Disney+ and Hulu.
