Toei Animation Unveils ‘Monkey Quest’ as Japan-U.S. Co-Production at Annecy

Toei Animation debuted a Work-in-Progress sneak peek of its ambitious co-production Monkey Quest on June 23 at the Annecy Animation Festival, positioning the film as the entry point to a larger transmedia universe.

The loosely adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West represents a deliberate fusion of Japanese anime aesthetics with global storytelling ambitions, according to producer Yoshi Ikezawa.

The project, which screened in the festival’s prestigious Work-in-Progress strand, follows 12-year-old Elle and her 1-year-old brother Adam as they encounter Okon (voiced by Adam Devine), a monkey with tremendous power as a legendary guardian of Earth.

The duo faces off against the villainous Vex (voiced by J.K. Simmons) in a quest spanning wildly different landscapes and a dimension beyond our own.

Anime’s Global Appeal

Ikezawa told Variety the film’s genesis came from a simple question: “How can Japanese anime reach the same level of mainstream awareness and emotional connection that major U.S. animated films have achieved with global audiences?”

“Anime has an incredible ability to create characters that audiences carry with them for many years,” Ikezawa said.

For him and co-producer Joseph Chou, the answer lay in anime’s unique character design.

To bring that vision to life, the producers approached Naoto Oshima, the original character designer of Sonic the Hedgehog, who developed a concept inspired by Journey to the West that could “carry the spirit and energy of anime, while also becoming a global family adventure.”

Director and screenwriter David N. Weiss noted the original pitch from Chou was “essentially ‘Journey to the West’ in space, and that became the foundation for everything we did.”

Co-director Stephanie Ma Stine (Kung Fu Panda 4) observed that the trickster archetype of Sun Wukong is “evergreen” because “in every culture and time period, there has been a keen fondness for the trickster character.”

Hypergalactic Universe Expansion

The film serves as the linchpin of Toei’s new transmedia slate.

Monkey Quest is the gateway to the larger Hypergalactic universe, linking the movie to an upcoming interactive and transmedia franchise that will extend across games and other platforms.

Development and pre-production began in the U.S., with plans to bring the production to Japan and onboard Japanese animators.

“As the project developed, we realized that many of the best animators and artists from around the world had grown up loving Japanese anime,” Ikezawa explained.

“They did not see anime as something foreign to them, they saw it as their native artistic language.”

The Annecy festival, running June 21-27, has spotlighted Monkey Quest among its must-see premieres and sneak peeks, underscoring the growing appetite for cross-cultural animated collaborations that blend Japanese craft with Western narrative traditions.
