Anya Taylor-Joy Joins ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ as New Elf

Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast as Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm, in Andy Serkis’ upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

The movie, set for a worldwide theatrical release on December 17, 2027, reunites beloved figures from across Middle-earth including Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace as King Thranduil. Serkis will both direct and reprise his role as Gollum.

The film chronicles the search for the titular corrupted Hobbit in the years leading up to The Fellowship of the Ring.

It aims to continue the storied cinema legacy of the six theatrical Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, which earned nearly $6 billion worldwide over two decades.

A New Elf Enters Middle-earth

Taylor-Joy’s character Seren is a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil. Importantly, Seren is a brand-new creation not present in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original books, marking an expansion of the Middle-earth canon for Serkis’ directorial debut in the franchise.

The actress joins an ensemble cast that also includes Kate Winslet as Marigol, Jamie Dornan as Strider, and Leo Woodall as Halvard.

Behind the Scenes

The screenplay is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, joined by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou in adapting Tolkien’s source material. The Oscar-winning creative team reunites with Peter Jackson, Walsh, Boyens, and Zane Weiner producing.

Ken Kamins, Serkis, and Jonathan Cavendish of The Imaginarium serve as executive producers.

Future of the Franchise

The Hunt for Gollum is not the only film in the Lord of the Rings universe in development. A second film, Shadow of the Past, is also being written by Philippa Boyens, Stephen Colbert, and Peter McGee, produced by WingNut Films in association with Spartina Industries.

Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute both films globally.

Taylor-Joy’s casting adds considerable star power to an already formidable ensemble. Seren’s role as a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm places her within the realm of Thranduil, played by Lee Pace.

The character’s description as a “trusted and lethal agent” suggests she will be a key figure in the pursuit of Gollum, bringing a new dynamic to the familiar lore.

With Serkis returning to one of cinema’s most iconic motion-capture performances and directing the project, the film carries high expectations. The involvement of original trilogy screenwriters Walsh and Boyens ensures continuity, while the new characters and expansion of the story offer fresh territory for audiences.
