Mastodon Announces First Album Since Brent Hinds’ Death

Mastodon will release their tenth studio album, Marrow Deep, on August 18 via Loma Vista Recordings. The record arrives as the Atlanta metal band’s first full-length release since the death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds, who died in a motorcycle accident in 2025.

It also marks a new lineup: guitarist Nick Johnston joins as a full-time recording member alongside founding members Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and Bill Kelliher.

The 12-track album draws inspiration from the Three Fates of Greek mythology, exploring the fragile connection between life, loss, and destiny.

Its lead single, “Snakes for Dinner,” is out now and features Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, reuniting the two acts for the first time since their 2006 collaboration on “Colony of Birchmen.”

The scorching rocker, imbued with defiance, finds Homme delivering a wicked vocal over heavy guitar work and melodic passages, with lyrics that touch on grief, absence, and resilience.

New lineup and production team

Marrow Deep follows the band’s 2021 album Hushed and Grim and comes after a period of significant upheaval. The departure of Hinds, a 25-year partnership, left the remaining members processing unresolved grief, a theme that surfaced in the recent short documentary The Mastodon in the Room.

That film, released prior to the album announcement, offers an intimate look at the band as they attempt to come to terms with the loss.

The album was co-produced by Mastodon at their own West End Sound studio in Atlanta alongside Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (High on Fire, Converge).

Mixing duties were handled by Andrew Scheps, whose extensive résumé includes Adele, Black Sabbath, and Metallica. Keyboardist João Nogueira contributed significant parts, and additional guest performers are expected to be announced closer to the release date.

Evolution of sound and legacy

While the band’s progressive sludge metal foundation remains intact, Marrow Deep reflects the personal evolution of Dailor, Sanders, and Kelliher following years of upheaval. The introduction of Johnston, a guitarist known for his work with acts such as the Aristocrats, brings a new dynamic to the band’s sound.

The album is the first full-length to feature Johnston as a recording member, though he had previously toured with the group. Mastodon’s decision to reunite with Homme two decades after their first collaboration adds a layer of continuity to the record.

“Snakes for Dinner” is likely to be a highlight of the album, which the band says explores the themes of life, loss, and destiny through the lens of the Three Fates.

With its heavy riffs, melodic passages, and guest appearances, Marrow Deep signals a new chapter for the Grammy-winning metal band as they navigate the aftermath of a founding member’s death and look toward the future.
