A preview screening for the anime Cyborg 009: Nemesis drew voice actors Yuki Kaji, Yuichi Nakamura, and Saori Hayami to Shinjuku Wald 9 in Tokyo on July 18, one day before the series premieres in Japan.
The three-episode series adapts Shoutarou Ishinomori’s original Cyborg 009 manga and centers on a 9-on-9 battle between the original 00-number cyborgs and a new faction led by the gravity-manipulating villain Graviton.
The premise shifts the long-running franchise toward a direct confrontation narrative, pitting each member of the classic lineup against a designated counterpart from Graviton’s ranks.
Voice Cast and Theme Artists Gather
Kaji, who voices the protagonist 009, a.k.a. Joe Shimamura, was joined at the event by Nakamura as N009/Graviton and Hayami as 003/Françoise Arnoul.
Special guest Kyoko, who performs the opening theme song “Ta ga Tame ni,” also appeared. Sukima Switch provides the ending theme.
The choice of Kyoko for the opening reflects a contemporary Japanese pop sensibility applied to a franchise that has cycled through multiple musical identities since Ishinomori’s manga debuted in 1964.
Pairing her with Sukima Switch gives the three-episode run two distinct musical bookends.
Production and Premiere Details
Production is credited to Arect and Ishimori Production, with the latter carrying forward the legacy of the original creator’s studio.
The three-episode format is a notable departure from the television series that have defined the property in past decades, suggesting a tighter, more cinematic approach suited to the 9-on-9 showdown at the center of the story.
Cyborg 009: Nemesis premieres in Japan on July 19, 2026.
